Search Engine Optimization(SEO) is no longer a buzz word, it’s a requirement for any business large or small that owns a website. Why is it so important you ask? It’s so important because more people are using the Internet as a preferred medium for finding and purchasing what they are searching for. Quite simply, if you’re not found in the search results for customers looking for your products, you will find it very difficult to leverage your website.

In order for your product or service to be found, you need to not only have a website, but it needs to be “Optimized” so Search Engines can find and index your websites content. To give you an idea of how the proliferation of the internet is changing the way people get information, the following list* explains the daily/monthly distribution through these common media channels:

Daily Newspaper Circulation – 48 Million – *Audit Bureau of Circulations

Monthly TV Viewership – 285 Million – *Nielsen

Monthly Internet Searches – 14 Billion – *comScore Media Metrix

With 14 Billion searches being performed every month, the time is now to make sure you are visible when a search is performed for your services or products. SEO is also the most effective online method for generating conversions because when someone searches for something and when they find your page, you have now entered the mind of your customer and provided them with what they were looking for. Customers like this and as a result they are more inclined to contact you for more information or simply purchase your product on-line.

Now that you know why SEO is so important my next article will explain how SEO works and how it can save you oodles of money!

Blogging is quickly becoming a must have feature for your website and your SEO strategy however it can be a tricky and sometimes fruitless venture until you are able tap into the pulse of the consumer or community you are looking to serve. More and more people are reading blogs on a daily basis and blogs have become a wonderful channel to communicate with people and provide a mechanism for people to communicate with you in the form of comments.

This short article will describe three best practices for developing a successful blogging strategy.

Get in the game – We have all heard the saying “You have to be in it, to win it” and this is true when it comes to blogging. Blogs come in all shapes and sizes and there are quite a few blogging tools available to you. Google for 5 minutes on the subject and you will see what I mean. Blogging can be a very fun and rewarding experience but you need to do some thinking about what you will blog about before you dive into the deep end however don’t let that stop you from jumping in and getting your feet wet.

Blog about what your customers are interested in – If you understand what your customers are interested in you are ahead of the game and blogging about these issues puts your best foot forward. Adopting this strategy removes the advertising aspect of your content but still helps you promote your business. Ultimately, by putting the best interests of your customers first your blog has a better chance of appealing to readers and generating positive feedback.

Blog Regularly – The great thing about blogs is that you can update it at any time, usually from any internet enabled computer so this gives you incredible flexibility to post new content at your convenience. It is incredibly important to make sure your blog does not go stale. There is nothing worse to the blog reading community, then a blog that hasn’t been updated in a year. By sticking to a regular interval of blog posts, you not only create new search engine friendly content each time you post, you show Google that your website is not going stale and that helps with SEO efforts for your website.

These are just a handful of best practices for running a blog. Keep in mind that blogging will require work so be prepared spend some time with it before you see any real benefit. Don’t be too discouraged and hang in there because your voice can be heard and your posts will certainly help provide fodder for Search Engine Optimization.

Because blogging is so important these days, every one of my customer websites has a blogging platform built into their websites and I strongly encourage my clients to take advantage of this wonderful feature.

Having been developing websites for the past 9 years, I have seen quite a few websites in my time in front of the Dual LCDs that span my desk, some of them really boggle my mind as to who would ever visit, let alone stay on these sites. The truth is that websites have to speak to your market and there is a fine balance between glamor and website usability.

Some of the most beautiful websites you have ever seen are inherently difficult to navigate while some of the ugliest websites are raking in conversions hand over fist, why? They made it simple to use. Generally, you have under 4 seconds to make a good impression with your website and what your visitor needs to find, must be findable and fast!

Understanding why your visitors are coming to your site and how they are getting there is tantamount to a successful website that converts visits into leads. With the rise of Landing Pages and the effectiveness of Google Adwords, you can test in real time simple, usable design that net results.
